Vaginal Yeast Infection
What! – not again, not another vaginal yeast infection.
If you’ve ever had one, you know the nasty, annoying misery it brings to your life.

So what’s the big deal? To me, the conventional treatment of female yeast infections is a nutshell of what’s wrong with the way our society deals with womens health issues.
Most of us treat a yeast infection by running to the drugstore, handing over $20, and walking around miserable for days with disgusting slime between our legs, not even sure if what we have is really a yeast infection.
Simple information on prevention and alternative treatments is ridiculously hard to find, partly because there’s little profit in it, and also because men don’t suffer from vaginal yeast infections. My goal is to help fill that gap, and to make a small contribution to the larger goal of helping women take control of our bodies.
We need to learn more about yeast infections in women, because there may be a problem brewing. Many ointments and creams are available in pharmacies, and the drug companies bombard us with hype about their yeast infection products. Many women assume that every vaginal burning, vaginal irritation, or vulvar itch they have is due to a yeast infection, and they run out to fill the itch with powerful antifungal creams.
The problem is that sometimes it isn’t really a yeast infection, and when you expose your naturally-occuring
vaginal yeast to these drugs, some of the yeast may be resistant. Only the resistant ones thrive and multiply and then guess what? The next time you get a yeast infection, you have drug-resistant yeast, and you can’t run to the pharmacy and pay $20 to cure it. You have to go to the doctor and get something much stronger.
How do You Know if You Have a Yeast Infection
If you’re not sure if you have one, check for the following vaginal yeast infection symptoms:
■ Itching and irritation in the vagina and at that entrance to the vagina (vulva)
■ A burning sensation, especially during intercourse or while urinating
■ Redness and swelling of the vulva
■ Vaginal pain and soreness
■ Thick, white, odor-free vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese appearance
